We woke to another grey, cold day so the morning cruise was spent toasty in our cabins, in bed watching the passing scenery which, after every schoolboy's joke city of Worms (as in Diet of, Martin Luther), gave way to the industrial profile of Mannheim which was in keeping with the grey skies. After an early lunch we left the boat to explore Speyer, the medieval seat of the emperors and home to the oldest Romanesque cathedral in Germany, which is nice - if you are into old Romanesque cathedrals. Of more immediate interest to Master Reid was the Speyer Technik Museum, one of the largest collections of machines, and specifically transport, in the world, with everything from a motor scooter to a Jumbo jet, along with submarines, vintage cars, fighter jets, formula one cars and a Space Shuttle. Simply magnificent.
